Precita @ Folsom Aggravated Assault Arrest
Aggravated Assault Arrest
Officers Thompson and Altamirano were sent to investigate an aggravated assault case. There were several witnesses at the scene. The witnesses told the officers that they observed two men in a verbal argument and that one of the men struck the other several times with an object. The witnesses called the police and stayed in the area and or followed the suspect until the police arrived. All of the witnesses positively identified the suspect. This was important because the victim’s injuries did not allow him to do so. Thanks to the courageous acts of these socially responsible community members, a violent criminal has been taken off our streets. This illustrates how our Community and Police partnership can work at its best.
[Anyone have more details on this? Was it a neighbor who was involved or a park user or? We too thank the witnesses for reporting this and making sure the violent criminal was apprehended. - Editor]

Fair Ave Shooting
First block of Fair St (near Mission). Homicide
Officers responded on the call of shots fired and found one man with a gunshot wound outside a home and another man down inside a home with gunshot wounds. The second man was declared dead and the first man's wound was not life threatening. Inspector Cagney, Homicide Detail, took over the case.
At first, Police said two suspects wearing black clothing were responsible for the shootings, but today it was reported that an arrest had been made and murdered victim identified as 36-year-old Marine veteran and Purple Heart recipient John P. Rogers. Max Reyes, 24, of San Francisco, was arrested in connection with the murder.
A followup article in the Chron/SFGate said:
Lt. Jim Spillane of the homicide detail said the fatally injured victim lived in a three-bedroom unit and was shot in the hallway.
"It did appear that he was targeted - they were looking for him," Spillane said. "It is a possibility that they had known each other."
Nothing about the motive has been stated. It would be really helpful if we knew a bit more about this crime, what happened to the other victim who was found in front of the house (and whose name has not been released yet).
A couple other links about this story: SF Examiner's detailed early report, followed by a very short article on SF Gate, the original Bay City News service wire story ran on CBS 5 and KTVU.

Attempted Armed Robbery Monday night? (Updated)
August 11, 2008 Precita Ave. & Harrison St. Attempted Armed Robbery: Gun
A 21 year old Oakland man found himself surrounded by four men as he walked to his car [update: which was parked just west of the Leonard Flynn School on the north side of Precita -in the dark area under the trees]. One of the men demanded his cell phone and the man refused to surrender it. The victim was knocked to the ground and struck over the head with a handgun. The four fled without taking anything from the victim. The victim heard a shot fired as the perpetrators ran away.
It sounds like there is far more story to this "event" than is being posted in the police blotter. Anyone know more about what's going on here? It's also unclear of which side of the park this was on. If you noticed a group of four men loitering around the park, can you describe them? Please post a comment if you can.

Shooting at 26th and Shotwell Streets (update)
(Via the excellent San Francisco Crime Blog and tipster Marijane.)
SF Gate also has this:
A teen was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the arm and leg while in the Mission District Saturday, according to a San Francisco Police Department spokesman.
The 16-year-old victim was standing at the corner of 26th and Shotwell streets around 7:30 p.m. when the suspect allegedly approached him and fired shots for no reason, spokesman Neville Gittens said.
The victim sustained gunshot wounds to one arm and one leg and was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Gittens.
Police suspect the incident may have been gang-related.
So that accounts for the sound of gunfire and the tons of sirens shortly thereafter.
There was another fatal shooting at this same location in December of 2006. Because of that, several cameras were installed at that intersection. Apparently, the cameras had no deterrent effect on this crime.

We wonder if the cameras recorded anything useful, or if they help expedite the arrivals of police and ambulances? Or were they useful at all?
