Oakes Children's Center incidents

There have been more incidents recently at the Oakes Children's Center, the school for developmentally delayed and emotionally disturbed children on Treat,

Wednesday, October 21st at 8:46 am
1500 blk of Treat

Police report: Vandalism to Property: Officers Saari and Trujillo responded to a school, where a student who was involved in a verbal altercation with another student and became disruptive. The student picked up a chair and smashed a classroom window. The student was cited and released.

Police at Oakes

This is not the first Police response to Oakes, in fact some neighbors who live nearby say that there are police cars there several times a week. There was also a police car on Tuesday this week.

A few days ago, a neighbor was walking home and saw a student outside the facility on Treat "having a tantrum and throwing around garbage cans, hitting cars". Other neighbor said a student threw a brick and damaged their car (apparently they didn't report this to the police). There have been other occurrences of students outside the building, standing in the middle of Treat Ave, blocking cars and not moving.

We have heard other complaints from neighbors about the busses that bring the children to and from the campus which then have to make U-turns at the top of Treat, and double-park for extended periods of time on the street in front of the school.

This is in contrast to what the Oakes people told neighbors at the August 15th, 2008 community meeting before the school opened, when they said "buses will offload on Folsom or drive through [the parking lot]."

This is the 2nd year of operation for Oakes at perhaps it is time for another community meeting to address neighbors concerns?

Are you sure the buses turning around on Treat are the buses for the Oakes students? I ask because I live on Folsom next to the church, and I see the buses on Folsom all the time. They definitely use Folsom for their buses, but I am not sure if they also use treat. I have asked the director about loading/unloading the buses in the Church parking lot rather than in front of my house, and he said the buses can't fit through the driveway next to the church. I have had some minor property damage done to my house, and had a student threaten to throw a brick at my car with me and baby in the car... I wonder if that story is the one you included in your post? Or if another neighbor actually had a brick thrown at their car? Just wondering if your information is coming first or second hand. Either way, I agree that another neighborhood meeting would be helpful. As I've said many times, I feel bad for the kids, and feel they deserve to go to school in a decent neighborhood because they can't help who they are, but I also worry about the safety of my family and my property. I'm not sure where to draw the line.

The person we heard from who had a brick thrown at their car was on Treat.

The busses (mini-busses) are definitely for Oakes, as they double-park in front of the rear entrance to the school for about an hour before departing. The busses then make a U-turn on Treat, which isn't an easy process because of how narrow the street is.

Not sure why the busses can't enter and exit the parking lot from Treat; that would solve the double-parking issue on Treat as well as the parking in front of people's homes on Folsom.

The general consensus we are hearing is that while neighbors are annoyed by Oakes they aren't trying to get it shut down. Rather they hope to get them to change some of their procedures to be more courteous to the neighbors.

Dear Neighbors,

My name is Austin Lambe and I am the Executive Director of Oakes Children's Center. First of all I want to acknowledge the concerns that have been raised and let you know that we are committed to being a good neighbor while we serve these special needs children in the neighborhood.
We would be happy to host another neighborhood meeting here at Oakes and I can set that up for some time in the coming weeks. If there is a time that would work better for folks please let me know. Otherwise I would look at a mid week evening at around 5.30pm?
As far as the buses go, our day treatment students (22 currently) arrive on CYO yellow busses and our white Ford vans at 8.30am and leave at 2.10pm or 4.45pm. These students are dropped off and are picked up on Folsom street. We could not stick to our original plan as the buses do not fit in the driveway. The private cars, vans and taxis that arrive on Treat Ave. to our main entrance are for a small number of different outpatient clients that attend our clinic in the afternoons.
It is true that the police have been called to our site. We are the ones calling for them. But it is not a weekly occurrence. There were two separate incidents with our children involving bricks in the past year, one on Treat and one on Folsom. We called the police when the damage was done.
Again, I am happy to host another meeting here and will get back to this site once we have a firm date.
Sincerely,
Austin.
