Big Fire at 26th and Valencia
A four-alarm fire happened this evening between Valencia, Poplar, 26th and 25th. Several buildings were destroyed, and many residents lost everything. The Chronicle now has a story up with more details. CBS 5 was the first to report it on their website, here's some video grabs from CBS 5's helicopter:

A commenter on the SFGate story wrote:
Someone who lived nearby posted images of the fire.
Here's a map of the location:
Here's a picture from the ally behind the buildings the next day. It's sad and tragic to see.

I have been watching this for almost 2 hours now, it is almost across the street from me. I think there were some injuries- as I saw people on 3 gernies being wheeled away.

Shooting at 26th and Shotwell Streets (update)
San Francisco Crime: Two Mission District shootings kill 1, injure 3: "A 16 year-old boy was shot in the arm and leg at 26th and Shotwell Streets at 7:30 p.m. He was transported to SFGH with non-life-threatening injuries."
(Via the excellent San Francisco Crime Blog and tipster Marijane.)
SF Gate also has this:
So that accounts for the sound of gunfire and the tons of sirens shortly thereafter.
There was another fatal shooting at this same location in December of 2006. Because of that, several cameras were installed at that intersection. Apparently, the cameras had no deterrent effect on this crime.

We wonder if the cameras recorded anything useful, or if they help expedite the arrivals of police and ambulances? Or were they useful at all?

SF Gate also has this:
A teen was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the arm and leg while in the Mission District Saturday, according to a San Francisco Police Department spokesman.
The 16-year-old victim was standing at the corner of 26th and Shotwell streets around 7:30 p.m. when the suspect allegedly approached him and fired shots for no reason, spokesman Neville Gittens said.
The victim sustained gunshot wounds to one arm and one leg and was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Gittens.
Police suspect the incident may have been gang-related.

Water Main repair on Harrison
On Harrison, above Precita, there has been water leaking from the curb area for a couple weeks. Some neighbors called 311 about it, and the water department came out and replaced the water line that feeds fresh water to the house by the leak.

More Treat Ave street work?
In the last few days, a lot of underground survey marks have popped up on Treat from Precita to the South end of Treat. Tonight, we encountered some PG&E employees marking/surveying gas lines, and asked them if they knew what was up.
``The city is going to do construction to fix the pot holes.`` Was the response. ``Not us, the City``.
You may remember, between October 2003 and Feb 2004, the city replaced the sewer line going down Treat ave. They opened up a 2 foot trench in the middle of the street, replaced the sewer lines, repaved the street and also replaced the curbs on the street.
Apparently, they didn't do something right when they closed up the trench in the middle of the street, because it has been sinking. There are numerous potholes, including the rather large one that appeared in January 2008, so hopefully the construction will be done properly this time.
However, we might be in for another 2 months of Treat being under construction again, like it was in last 2003.
(Here are some pictures from the 2003/2004 sewer replacement on Treat)

The photo below shows a cross-section of the street after it was cut through. Notice the old cobblestones/ bricks under the asphalt.

The new sewer line. They would rip out the old pipes, and immediately replace it with the new pipes.

The new pipes were laid in a bed of gravel, our understanding is because that gives the pipes a bit of room to move during an earthquake.

If you know anything more about this construction, post a comment. Calls to 311 were directed to a voicemail number for DPW, who didn't return our call.
